The short version: Measure each bed’s length × width in feet, pick a depth (3–4″ is ideal), then use Sq Ft × Depth ÷ 324 = Cubic Yards. Prefer to skip the math? Use our Mulch Coverage Calculator.
If you have ever stood in your yard in Bellevue, Kirkland, or Redmond wondering how many yards of bark or mulch you actually need, you are not alone. Ordering too little means a second trip; ordering too much means a pile taking up your driveway. The good news: the math is simple once you break it into three steps.
Step 1: Measure Your Space
You do not need fancy tools — just your feet. Step off the length and width of each bed and jot the numbers down. Most yards are not perfect rectangles, so break curvy or oddly shaped areas into smaller squares and rectangles, then add them together.
Length (ft) × Width (ft) = Square Feet
Step 2: Decide How Deep
Depth matters as much as area. For most landscapes we recommend a total depth of 3 to 4 inches — the sweet spot for weed control and long-lasting coverage. Vegetable rows and lighter functional mulch can go closer to 2 inches.
Step 3: Do the Yardage Math
Material is sold by the cubic yard, so convert your square footage with this formula:
Square Feet × Depth (inches) ÷ 324 = Cubic Yards
Here are two real examples:

A fast rule of thumb for how far one cubic yard stretches at common depths:
Good to know: Bark King has a 10 cubic yard minimum delivery, so if your project comes in under that, it is a great time to refresh the whole yard at once.
Let the Calculator Do the Work
Do not want to do the math by hand? Use our free Mulch Coverage Calculator. Plug in your length, width, and depth, and it tells you exactly how many cubic yards to order.
Why Getting the Amount Right Matters
Order short and you will have thin, patchy coverage that lets weeds through. Order too much and you are stuck moving a pile by wheelbarrow. Getting the number right the first time saves time, money, and your back — especially on the larger properties we see throughout Sammamish and the Greater Eastside. Not sure whether bark or mulch is the right pick? Our bark vs. mulch guide breaks it down.
