How to measure your beds

You don’t need a tape measure or a measuring wheel — just your feet. Step off the length and width of each bed and convert your steps into feet.

Most beds are curved rather than square, so break each area into rough squares and rectangles, measure each one, and add them together.

Check what’s already there

While you’re walking the beds, check the depth of the mulch that’s left in a few spots and take an average. Most beds want 3 to 4 inches in total, so if an inch is still doing its job, you only need 2 to 3 inches of new material. Enter that number as the depth.
