What we install

Each material does a different job. Here is what it is, what it suits, and where to read more.

Close-up of medium fir and hemlock bark

Medium Bark

Fir & hemlock · 1½–2″ minus

Heavy on fines, which is what blocks the weeds. Rake it and the nuggets sit up on the surface. The default for beds that have to look good and stay clear.

Close-up of fine screened fir and hemlock bark

Fine Bark

Fir & hemlock · 1″ minus

Clean and uniform, with a finer, more manicured finish. Breaks down into the soil over time, so it doubles as a soil amendment.

Close-up of dark composted Royal Mulch

Royal Mulch

Fertil-Mulch® · ½″ screened

Composted sawdust and manure. Goes down dark coffee and fades to light brown. High in nutrients and holds water — for beds you want to feed, not just cover.

Close-up of dark certified organic compost

Compost

Certified organic

Made from locally recycled garden prunings and trimmings. Adds organic matter, microbes and trace minerals, released slowly. Use it as mulch or work it in.

Close-up of cedar playground chips

Playground Chips

Cedar · 1″ square, sliver-less

Untreated cedar in a lighter beige. Right for play areas, dog runs and pathways. Not for flower beds.

ADA Certified Playchips

Sof’Fall engineered wood fiber

Meets ASTM impact attenuation and ADA wheelchair accessibility, rated to a 25 ft fall height. The fill knits into a stable surface — for schools, parks and childcare.

Getting the depth right

Depth decides whether the job works. These figures are for bark and mulch — compost and play chips are quoted by area and depth for the site.

1

For weed control

3 to 4 inches on the first application. Any thinner and weeds come through — and the material has been wasted.

2

For appearance only

2 inches is enough when the bed is already clear and you just want it looking finished.

3

Keeping it right

Apply in spring or fall, before heavy weed growth. Rake once or twice a year, top up every other year, and keep material clear of plant stems.

We count what’s already there

Before we quote, we measure the mulch already on the bed and count it toward the depth. You’re not paying to bury material that is still doing its job.

Not sure which one?

Most residential beds take medium bark. Fine bark for a tidier finish. Royal Mulch or compost when the soil needs feeding as well as covering. Cedar chips for play areas and dog runs, and ADA certified Sof’Fall where the surface has to meet a standard.
