What goes in the beds

Four materials, each for a different job. Here’s what each one is best at.

Close-up of medium fir and hemlock bark

Medium Bark

Fir & hemlock · 1½–2″ minus

Heavy on fines, which is what blocks the weeds. Rake it and the nuggets sit up on the surface. The default for beds that have to look good and stay clear.

Close-up of fine screened fir and hemlock bark

Fine Bark

Fir & hemlock · 1″ minus

Clean and uniform, with a finer, more manicured finish. Breaks down into the soil over time, so it doubles as a soil amendment.

Royal Mulch

Fertil-Mulch® · ½″ screened

Composted sawdust and manure. Goes down dark coffee and fades to light brown. High in nutrients and holds water — for beds you want to feed, not just cover.

Close-up of dark certified organic compost

Compost

Certified organic

Made from locally recycled garden prunings and trimmings. Adds organic matter, microbes and trace minerals, released slowly. Use it as mulch or work it in.

How blower installation works

A remote-controlled hose places the material exactly where it belongs — nothing dumped, nothing wheeled.

1

Placed bed by bed

The operator changes the application rate on the move — a trickle around delicate plants, wide open on slopes and large areas.

2

Reaches almost anywhere

Lightweight hose and a radio remote reach slopes and embankments, over fences and hedges, into courtyards and planter boxes.

3

Easy on the property

Water injection keeps dust down while we work, and the material goes in the bed — not on the lawn or the drive.

Depth that does the job

Most beds want around 3–4 inches of mulch in total. Where some is still doing its job, a top-up is enough — and mulch should never be piled against trunks and stems.

Not sure which one?

Most residential beds take medium bark. Fine bark for a tidier finish. Royal Mulch or compost when the soil needs feeding as well as covering.
